The Musicology Department is the teaching institution of music theory in our conservatory, and the research foundation originated from the “Folk Song Research Association” established in 1939 at the Lu Xun Academy of Arts in Yan’an, and has gone through several stages such as "Chinese Folk Music Research Association", "Music Research Office", "Folk Music Teaching and Research Office", "Folk Music Research Office", and "Music Research Institute". In October 1999, it was officially established.


The department has two specialties: "Musicology" under the subject catalog of "Music and Dance" and "Art History" under the subject catalog of "Art Theory", and has four teaching and research offices: Ethnic Music Theory, Chinese Music History, Western Music History and Art History. Our department also has a high-quality faculty with high academic level and strong teaching and research ability, with 14 full-time faculty teachers. Among them, 79% hold doctoral degrees, 86% are professors and associate professors, and 29% have overseas study experience. The faculty teachers have been awarded as "Special Allowance Experts of the State Council", "Famous Teachers of Liaoning Province", “Outstanding Young Backbone Teachers of Liaoning Province Universities”, "Outstanding Young Scholar Growth Plan of Liaoning Universities" and other honors, offering 28 professional and professional foundation courses. Our department has published a variety of theoretical monographs and many academic papers focusing on the study of music culture in northeast China in core journals, and has 2 provincial high-quality courses and 1 provincial high-quality textbook. In 2014 and 2018, it was awarded as "Liaoning Undergraduate Key Construction Major - Comprehensive Reform Experimental Major" and "the first batch of first-class undergraduate education demonstration majors in Liaoning ordinary higher education schools".


In recent years, our department has organized and hosted various large academic conferences, carried out practical activities such as "non-heritage into campus", fieldwork and social investigation, respectively established "Shenyang Conservatory of Music Teaching Practice Base" and "Shenyang Conservatory of Music Student Art Practice Base" in Wafangdian, Xiuyan and Liuyi schools, established "Northeast Music Innovation Laboratory", and undertaken Liaoning Province’s "Research and Training Program for Chinese non-heritage inheritors", making useful explorations and positive contributions in serving the local community and inheriting excellent traditional music culture.
